Volunteers...Making It Happen!by jennie
Volunteers...Making It Happen!
Spring has officially sprung here in beautiful Lake Tahoe. And
spring, to me, means a few certain things ---unexpected drops & spikes in
temperature, the inexplicable craving for ice cream, my first set of sunburned
shoulders from getting too excited about the sierra sunshine, and making the
call to my volunteers. Drop-check, spike-check, shoulders-check, cookies and
cream cone-check, the only thing left to satiate my spring fever is to send the
call for help out to my volunteers. Our
festival relies upon our volunteers for over 2,000 hours of support each year,
jobs that would require a paid staff person to complete, were it not for this amazing
group of people. I will avoid the
over-used statements referencing our struggling economy and say that the role
of our volunteers extends far beyond just saving us a line item. The individuals I work alongside each summer
are people who are invested in their community.
They care about the arts and the Lake. They are generous and kind and pretty darn
fun to be around. It’s never a surprise
when I see them swapping phone numbers at the end of a night working
together---birds of a feather and all that.
They are usually the first smile Festival visitors see when they get
wristbanded upon entering our gates and the last one they see as they hand over
their last bit of trash or recyclables at evening’s end. The contributions volunteers make to our
Festival and to my life in particular, make me truly excited for my long summer
hours. In the company of volunteers, I
laugh a lot. I get to share my passion
for the arts and my appreciation for the natural beauty that is our home at Sand Harbor. I am reminded that, people care and are
capable of acting outside themselves for the betterment of community. With these thoughts I say, hooray for spring,
but bring on summer!
